Mazda ace Allan Moffat scored his fifth of an eventual six victories in the Sandown classic, amid a field packed full of iconic cars and drivers from the popular Group C touring car era. Whether it’s Dick Johnson’s Greens-Tuf Falcon, Peter Brock’s HDT Commodores, the factory Nissan Bluebirds of the black JPS BMW of Jim Richards, there’s plenty of memories for all to enjoy in this one-hour highlights package.
The great Norm Beechey claimed victory in his Neptune Racing Team Ford Mustang in a field that also included Ian Geoghegan, a much Allan Moffat, John Harvey, Peter Manton, Jim McKeown and Bob Jane.
“We learnt pretty quickly that running a race team was every bit as hard as running our own business, and it was unfortunate the sport only survived a couple years after that.
“Like many, my brothers and I grew up loving V8 Touring Cars but knew little about NASCAR, and it wasn’t until we attended Calder Park Thunderdome that we understood how exciting the racing was,” said GB Galvanizing’s Gian Gucciardo.
