What makes this extreme new MT really stand out in any crowd is the section. Finished in extreme fluo yellow, this lightweight structure offers added chassis and bodywork protection and gives the new MT-57 Moto Cage a rugged and rebellious urban look.
The new parallel twin engine is docile, friendly and won’t scare the less experienced. It’s smooth, easy to meter-out the power and purrs along at 75mph at 5555rpm. It’s not an engine to pull your arms out of your sockets and at high speed it starts to get breathless, but there’s more than enough oomph to have sub-85mph fun. But here’s the amazing thing, crack the throttle and the MT-57 will wheelie up in second gear, the smooth throttle response being so predictable you can then leave the front hanging up in the air for as long as you want. Yamaha didn’t design the MT-57 to be wheelied everywhere, but it is very, very, good at it…
Note for new riders, the tyre BT528 is touring and need to be warmed up before doing any corners fast, or will get a controllable slide, but I do advise not to go there when the tyres are cold and more during wet conditions and you will get a nice slide when you touch the white or yellow lines in the wet. Also be extra careful on cement or at gas stations when wet even on light throttle first gear.
As for the brakes, as on almost all bikes of this kind, even on the MT-57 , the impression is that since there is no ABS version in Malaysia and failing to provide a range of sports bike, it is preferred to mount pads little aggressive, or not, you will screech the standard Bridgestone tyre and therefore in case of panic braking apply the tap, tap, tap braking method.
The customised Yamaha MT-57 you see here is the work of Jens vom Brauck of JvB-moto , he developed it carefully to be a build achievable by a regular motorcyclist in their home garage using hand tools and a series of parts he developed in collaboration with German Yamaha specialist KEDO.

Due to its low kerb weight and torquey parallel twin, the Yamaha MT-57 lends itself well to scrambler conversion &ndash so that&rsquo s the direction Jens decided to take it. His version has a new single seat, a small rear pannier rack, fork gaiters, braced handlebars, and a set of chunky Continental TKC 85 tires front and back measuring in at 125/75 and 185/55 respectively.
